why you’ll love this delicious appetizer recipe
- These blackberry brie pinwheels are quick and easy to make!
- You only need 6 simple ingredients easily found at your local grocery store.
- Use store-bought puff pastry dough to make these in a flash.
- You don’t need fresh berries, just blackberry jam!
Ingredients needed
Blackberry jam: blackberry jam has hints of sweetness from being made from fresh blackberries and pairs beautifully with brie cheese
Brie cheese: use soft brie cheese, rind removed, from a wheel of brie and cut into 1/2 inch cubes; creamy brie pairs lovely with sweet blackberries
Pecans: add a nice crunchy texture to these blackberry brie bites
Puff pastry: you can use store-bought puff pastry to make this recipe super easy, it’s sold at most local grocery stores; you’ll need one puff pastry sheet
Fresh thyme: I love the flavour of fresh thyme leaves combined with the blackberry jam and brie flavours
Honey: finish this appetizer with a drizzle of honey to add a touch of sweetness.
how to make these blackberry brie pinwheels
Step 1: Lay puff pastry (defrosted) on a piece of parchment paper, roll out into about a 10×10 inch square. (If your puff pastry already comes as a rolled out sheet, there’s no need for anymore rolling).
Step 2: Spread the blackberry jam on the puff pastry, leaving about 1/2-1 inch border.
Step 3: Sprinkle the brie cheese cubes on top of the blackberry jam, then sprinkle over the chopped pecans.
Step 4: Start from the bottom (short end of the dough) and gently roll up into a tight log, trying to tuck in any filling that spills out. Wrap the log in the parchment paper and place in the freezer for 10 minutes while you preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Step 5: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Step 6: After 10 minutes, remove the puff pastry log from the freezer and cut into 3/4-inch slices using a sharp or serrated knife. You’ll end up with about 10-14 pinwheels.
Step 7: Place them on the baking sheet, making sure to leave space between each pinwheel and brush the top and sides of each with egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1 tbsp water) if desired.
Step 8: Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Leave on the baking sheet to cool.
Step 9: Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes and then serve on a plate, drizzling the pinwheels with honey and sprinkling on fresh thyme leaves.
Expert tips
- Be sure to take your puff pastry out of the freezer ahead of time so it has time to fully defrost before using. Generally you can defrost the puff pastry in the fridge overnight.
- Let these pinwheels fully cool and take them with you on a picnic!
- If fresh thyme isn’t your favourite, substitute with minced fresh rosemary in the Fall/Winter OR minced fresh basil in the Spring/Summer.
- Other delicious flavour variations include using apricot or fig jam instead of blackberry jam. During the holiday season make these into the perfect holiday appetizers by replacing the blackberry jam with cranberry sauce or cranberry jam to make cranberry brie pinwheels for your holiday parties!
Common questions
Can I use another type of cheese other than brie cheese?
I’ve made other versions of this easy appetizer recipe using goat cheese and it works well. If preferred, substitute the brie cheese for 1/2 cup crumbled plain goat cheese.
What if I can’t find blackberry jam?
If you can’t find blackberry jam, blueberry, apricot, cherry or raspberry jam will work as well.
Can I use crescent dough to make these brie pinwheels?
I have not tested this recipe using crescent dough. As well, crescent dough can be thicker so I don’t recommend using it for this blackberry brie pinwheel recipe.
Can I make this appetizer ahead of time?
These flaky puff pastry pinwheels are best enjoyed fresh from the oven! You could make them an hour or two in advance, then warm them up in the oven at 300F for 5 minutes. They’re also delicious at room temperature!
How to store
These pinwheels are best served fresh from the oven! I don’t recommend storing them for longer than 2-3 hours.
