cubed gruyere cheese on a sheet of puff pastry

Ingredients needed to make this baked gruyère cheese

Puff pastry: use one sheet of defrosted puff pastry as the base for this recipe

Gruyère cheese: nutty, delicious gruyere cheese that is cut into cubes will work best for the cheesy filling

Fig jam:  with its sweet and sometimes tart flavour, fig jam pairs well with the melted, cheesy gruyere.

Egg: a beaten egg used as an ‘egg wash’ and brushed over the pastry before baking gives the puff pastry a lovely golden colour

Fresh rosemary: fresh minced rosemary adds the perfect savory flavour to this recipe; alternatively you could use fresh thyme if you prefer.

Honey: a drizzle of a couple teaspoons honey finishes this appetizer perfectly

How to make this puff pastry gruyere cheese appetizer

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425F.

Step 2: Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Lay the defrosted puff pastry sheet on the parchment paper. Make a pile of the cheese cubes in the centre of the puff pastry sheet. Dollop the fig jam within / on top of the cheese cubes.

Step 3: Wrap the gruyere with the puff pastry by folding the corners over the cheese, working around in a circle to make a closed cheese package.

Step 4: Brush all over with the whisked egg (egg wash) and then bake for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is a deep golden brown.

Step 5: Allow to cool 5 minutes before using the parchment paper to help move the gruyere to a serving platter. Serve with crostini and crackers and enjoy!

Expert tips for making this puff pastry baked gruyere

  • Make sure the gruyere cheese is cubed when making this recipe; do not use shredded gruyere cheese as the recipe will not work the way it’s intended.
  • You can bake this appetizer on a large baking sheet and then move to a serving dish. Alternatively, you can bake in a smaller serving dish. Either way, make sure to use a sheet of parchment paper.
  • Serve the baked gruyere cheese about 5 minutes after it’s out of the oven as it will be the most melted; the cheese will start to harden after about 15-20 minutes. Don’t fret, the baked gruyere cheese is still delicious as it cools.
  • Make crostini to serve with this baked gruyere: Preheat your oven to 400°F and slice your baguette into 1-inch thick slices. Brush the baguette slices with olive oil on one hand and place on a single layer on a baking sheet. Toast for 10 minutes, making sure to flip the slices halfway through.

Common questions

What if I can’t find gruyere cheese?
If you can’t find nutty gruyere cheese, Emmental cheese, Swiss Cheese or Fontina cheese will also work as they have similar tastes and textures. You could use a combination of cheeses in a pinch!

Is there another jam I can use instead of fig jam?
The nutty flavor of gruyere cheese goes well with apricot jam, cherry or apple jam.

Can I make this same recipe with brie cheese?
While this recipe hasn’t been tested with brie cheese, brie cheese baked in puff pastry is also a popular appetizer. From personal experiance, a 225-250g or 8oz wheel of brie can be used; layer the brie in the center of the puff pastry; spread the 1/3 cup of fig jam on top of the brie; then close the puff pastry as the intructions state above; bake for 20-25 minutes.

Hi Katherine! Great question – I recommend just keeping leftovers in the fridge for 1-2 days and you can reheat in the microwave or at a low temperature in the oven until melty and delicious again. I’ve never frozen these leftovers and not sure how the baked gruyere cheese would freeze.
