<p>There are so many delicious ingredients to cook with as we transition seasons.</p>
<p>So let&rsquo;s chat recipes to make in September!<span id="more-6308"></span></p>
<p>Right now we&rsquo;re harvesting the last vegetables from our garden, specifically carrots and san marzano tomatoes. Our tomatoes took a while but with all the sun we&rsquo;ve had these last few weeks they ripened just perfectly! I plan on making some <a href="https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015178-marcella-hazans-tomato-sauce" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">homemade tomato sauce</a> with our tomatoes. And with the carrots we plan to enjoy them for afternoon snacks.</p>
<p>We&rsquo;ve also got a TON of herbs still growing so I plan on doing a couple things:</p>
<ul>
<li>Drying out the rosemary to use during the year; I simply put the rosemary stalks in a brown bag with a few holes in it and let it air dry for a couple of days.</li>
<li>Storing some fresh herbs in the fridge for immediate use &ndash; you can find <a href="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/2020-05-whats-in-season-recipes-to-make-in-may/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">my tips in this blog post</a>.</li>
<li>Making some <a href="https://www.thekitchn.com/freeze-herbs-in-olive-oil-173648" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">butter/oil-herb ice cubes</a> for future use as a starter to sauteed vegetable dishes or even soups.</li>
</ul>
<p>And before we wrap up our garden for good this year, I always write notes on what grew well where in the garden, what didn&rsquo;t go so well and ideas for next year. I find it super helpful when the Springtime rolls around!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6326" src="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284.jpg" alt="Recipes to cook in september" width="1067" height="1600" srcset="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284.jpg 1067w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284-187x280.jpg 187w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284-1024x1536.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px" data-pin-media="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-9284.jpg"></p>
<p>As I get back in the kitchen there are many end of summer ingredients still to cook with in September PLUS we start to see some of my Fall favourites like apples.</p>
<p>I LOVE apple season so I&rsquo;m also dreaming up some new <a href="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/?s=apples" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">apple recipes</a> for you too!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-6324" src="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066.jpg" alt="Recipes to cook in september" width="1067" height="1600" srcset="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066.jpg 1067w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066-187x280.jpg 187w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066-1024x1536.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px" data-pin-media="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Recipes-to-Make-in-September-7066.jpg"></p>

I&rsquo;ve been harvesting a lot of vegetables from our garden and it&rsquo;s been inspiring many of our dinners.</p>
<p>So, let&rsquo;s get to my monthly favourites including recipes and what to cook in September!<span id="more-3606"></span></p>
<p>In about mid-August we started to harvest vegetables from our garden including beets, radishes and if you can believe it, potatoes!</p>
<h4>Potatoes</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3634" src="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-9.jpg" alt="What's In Season - Recipes to Make in September | cookinginmygenes.com" width="668" height="1002" srcset="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-9.jpg 668w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-9-187x280.jpg 187w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-9-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px" data-pin-media="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-9.jpg"><br>
Yes, I tried my hand at growing potatoes this year and grew a total of 12. I&rsquo;m pretty sure I need a deeper container to plant them in next year but other than that they were really easy to grow. And, when we roasted them up they were very delicious! Speaking of potatoes, I have an amazing &lsquo;3 side dishes on one sheet pan&rsquo; recipe coming to you this fall that includes potatoes and is perfect for Thanksgiving.</p>
<h4>Radishes</h4>
<p>We&rsquo;ve gotten two rounds of breakfast radishes from our garden so we&rsquo;re still using them in salads a lot. And, I&rsquo;ve been enjoying them on toast with a bit of <a href="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/spring-toast-with-radishes-pea-shoots-and-feta/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">goat cheese or feta and some pea shoots</a>.</p>
<h4>Beets</h4>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3633" src="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-3.jpg" alt="What's In Season - Recipes to Make in September | cookinginmygenes.com" width="668" height="1002" srcset="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-3.jpg 668w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-3-187x280.jpg 187w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-3-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px" data-pin-media="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-3.jpg"><br>
And we pretty much have beets now for the entire fall season, haha. This year we grew chioggia beets (also known as candy-cane striped beets) and golden beets. Golden beets are my favourite because they&rsquo;re a touch sweeter than the others I find.</p>
<p>One of my favourite ways to enjoy golden beets is to peel and cut them into cubes; roast at 400F with olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper for about 25 minutes (or until done to your liking). Then, I&rsquo;ll make a salad with greens like arugula or kale, add some walnuts, feta or goat cheese and balsamic dressing. So simple, so delicious! And another recipe that I love to make with golden beets are these <a href="https://www.howsweeteats.com/2015/06/golden-beet-chips-with-spicy-goat-cheese-dip/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Golden Beet Chips with Spicy Goat Cheese from How Sweet Eats</a>; honestly amazzzzing.</p>
<p>We still have a couple jalape&ntilde;os popping up too and then the only other vegetables I have left to harvest are onions and garlic. I&rsquo;m trying to give them a bit more time so I&rsquo;ll have to report back!</p>
<p>Other than harvesting and eating all the vegetables, we took an epic Canadian East Coast trip at the end of August. It was magical!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3641" src="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-23.jpg" alt="What's In Season - Recipes to Make in September | cookinginmygenes.com" width="668" height="1002" srcset="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-23.jpg 2560w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-23-187x280.jpg 187w, https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-23-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px" data-pin-media="https://www.cookinginmygenes.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-In-Season-Recipes-to-Make-in-September-from-cookinginmygenes.com-23.jpg"><br>
We travelled throughout Nova Scotia and PEI eating all of the seafood, enjoying local wines and relaxing on some pretty amazing Canadian beaches. Plus we enjoyed probably the most epic culinary experience we&rsquo;ve ever had called the <a href="https://innatbayfortune.com/fireworks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fireworks Feast at the Inn at Bay Fortune</a> &ndash; OMG. I have so much to share from this trip so I&rsquo;m going to write a post on just that travel experience. So, stay tuned for my foodie travel adventures!
